Position Summary:
Reporting to the Director, Global Engagement (GE), the Associate Director – Global Communications manages, develops, and implements McGill’s overseas media engagement strategy. Responsible for strengthening ties with international media, cultivating an understanding of institutional and faculty-specific international priorities, building McGill University brand awareness overseas, and ensuring communication strategy alignment with international recruitment priorities developed by Enrolment Services (ES). Manage and employ diverse communications tools and techniques to develop and implement an integrated global communications strategy that can engage different audiences, including both internal and external stakeholders, in a variety of communication platforms. Responsible for establishing benchmark objectives and conducting regular evaluations of McGill’s global media engagement. Directly supervise a team of professional and clerical staff.
Primary Responsibilities:

Manage, develop, and implement an international media engagement strategy for McGill. Work collaboratively with the GE and Communication and External Relations (CER) teams, ES, University Advancement, faculty representatives, and other internal stakeholders on priorities and initiatives.

Lead the team in communicating and promoting the McGill story to global audiences – including prospective students and faculty, current students, alumni, and partner institutions in a creative, compelling, and tailored way – disseminating the narrative of McGill University as a truly global institution that cultivates tomorrow’s leaders, fosters extraordinary research, and makes a major positive impact on societies around the world.

Lead the team in determining short-term objectives and strategies.

Build an international media relations strategy, identifying ways to strengthen ties creatively and strategically with key media outlets around the world.

In close collaboration with CER’s Associate Director, Internal Communications, help develop and foster an internal communications strategy around McGill’s international presence, highlighting ways in which the university is active on a global stage and sharing opportunities for global engagement with the McGill community.

Provide professional expertise and ensure the alignment of all International Communications activities with University priorities and CER’s overarching strategic communications and marketing plan.

Manage work on diplomatic outreach and visits to other countries and universities.

Identify opportunities to support engagement in priority regions for the ES Enrolment Services team, tailoring media outreach and messaging for target audiences.

In collaboration with CER, closely develop overall media engagement strategy and specific opportunities for media engagement during overseas travel by senior members of McGill administration.

In collaboration with CER’s Director of Institutional Communications, provide McGill administration with professional expertise and advice when potentially contentious situations arise internationally.

In collaboration with CER, serve as primary point of contact for the organization of visits to McGill campus by international media outlets, identifying appropriate interlocuters to share relevant programs and stories.

Manage, identify, and leverage new opportunities for strategic collaboration with influential, non-traditional international media outlets.

Directly manage a team of professional and support staff.

Media relations and internal communications experience, ideally with a variety of international media.

Agility with new technologies, and willingness and ability to leverage them to achieve communications objectives.

Superior professional French and English language skills, written and spoken.
