The Packaging Food Safety Expert is expected to lead and support R&D, the Global Innovation Center (GIC) and Scientific & Regulatory Affairs (SRA) by providing food safety assessments and the technical expertise needed to achieve compliance for packaging materials, add-on items, premia and seasonal promotions as well as in preparing the business for the use of new and novel Food Contact Material (FCM) to support packaging innovation projects.
Master’s degree in a technical area, such as food chemistry, food science/technology, chemistry, chemical or packaging engineering or material science.
At least 5 - 10 years of experience in a technical area. for packaging materials and premia (e.g. toys) is required.
Ideally experience working with trade associations, packaging research associations, government agencies and vendors to safely assess and resolve regulatory matters regarding packaging materials
The Pack and Premia Food Safety Expert supports the development and the execution of the Petcare Packaging strategy to manage critical ingredients, contaminants, and food contact material safety (FCM).
Capable to safely risk assess material to be used for packaging in supporting packaging engineers to make safe and legal decisions.
Provide packaging food safety assessments and expertise in the use of new and novel FCM to support packaging innovation projects.
Supports the development and deployment of FCM business processes, systems and standards in the regions.
Ensures that newly developed or revised packaging materials, add-on items, premia, and seasonal promotions meet safety requirements to be able to obtain regulatory approval so that they can be marketed in the target countries.
Works with internal and external experts in reviewing and developing programs including test programs to generate the necessary information for safety assessments and regulatory compliance.
Able to Identify and recommend experts to conduct packaging material, toy and add-on item testing. Oversees the evaluation of the results, recommends the appropriate corrective actions and proactively communicates results within project team.
Keeps up to date knowledge on key developments in the packaging material safety developments and the relevant chemical safety risks and contaminants.
Actively participates and provides leadership in the Petcare Packaging Community of Practice and provides input, cross-segment leadership and best practice sharing across Mars segments as a member of Mars Packaging Quality Management Community.
Establish and maintain a network of external experts able to provide consultancy for identifying relevant chemical and physical methods for the Pack and Premia quality, safety and regulatory compliance assessment.
The pack and premia food safety expert must be able to apply knowledge in, chemical safety and liaises closely with the toxicology experts in the segment and SRA to navigate critical issues and projects
