Short Description
This position is headquartered in Saskatoon. The service area for the position is in Hanley/Blackstrap. A truck will be provided for work in the district the position services.
As the Technologist 2, Non-potable Systems, you will provide water to new and existing customers and perform operation and maintenance work within the SSEWS water system, which includes 250 km of canals and 7 reservoirs. You will operate and maintain pumpstations and boosters to supply industrial, commercial, and agricultural users.
Job Duties
Undertakes operational duties associated with the SSEWS regional water supply district including installation of system works and equipment. Performs flow and pressure control testing and maintenance on existing connections. Undertakes leak, pump and motor repair and maintenance. Performs line locates for contractors and oversees contractors and/or trades people to perform operations and maintenance work.
Conducts field inspections of canal and reservoir operations to monitor performance and identify maintenance requirements. Performs field and chemical testing and water sampling, compiles and records data and generates applicable reports. Performs regularly scheduled applications of herbicide to control aquatic and non-aquatic weeds within the canal system.
Performs relevant technical calculations and assists with operational and maintenance reports and technical documentation. Maintains system inventory and assists with identifying issues and maintenance requirements. Performs monthly meter readings, works with engineering staff on capital projects and responds to operational issues as requested and undertakes follow-up as required. Liaises with regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with permits and licenses.
Undertakes operational duties including operating light and heavy equipment and performing regular equipment maintenance. Assists with training and provides direction to staff on safe and efficient operational and maintenance procedures and techniques.
Qualifications
To qualify, you will have a two-year technical diploma. Preference will be given to candidates with a Water Resources Engineering Technology or similar discipline. Certification as an Applied Science Technologist (A.Sc.T.) or Certified Technician (C.Tech) is required to be obtained.
Certification at the appropriate levels in Water Treatment, Water Distribution, Wastewater Collection and Wastewater Treatment is required to be obtained in accordance with the Operator Certification Board requirements or existing industry reciprocity agreements.
You will have a valid Pesticide Applicator’s License and Class 5 Driver’s License, preferably Class 1A. Where applicable, a valid Saskatchewan operator’s license for the appropriate vehicle class of equipment within a district is required.
In addition to the above qualifications the job requires 2 years of experience in the following areas:
- Working knowledge of water distribution, water transmission, open channel flow and reservoir operational issues; knowledge of irrigation practices and principles; and regional district operational and maintenance procedures including pipeline, pump, control valve and canal repair.
- Knowledge of construction practices and procedures.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, outside agencies and the public; and develop and maintain a positive corporate climate.
Special Requirements: The position requires the incumbent to undergo a Criminal Record Check and Drug and Alcohol test. You must be legally entitled to work in Canada. A valid Saskatchewan driver’s license is required.
